Let's play the game called 'Splendor'.

No. He isn't blowing his nose.

A relatively new game came to light the other day, so thought we'd give it a go. Splendor - tipped for awards this year and an ingenious little fella it is too. And quite quick to play. And yet simple too.

As you can see, cards are laid out in a grid, with stacks to the left and the resources - gems - laid out below. The game plays slightly differently depending on the number of players. The easiest cards to obtain are on the lowest row and the trickier ones on each subsequent row up. You need to obtain 15 victory points by spending gems to buy cards. And that's about it.

The clever bit is that there's all sorts of things going on at the same time and a lot of it is inside your own head...

So, in brief - Each turn you take resources, either one of each of three colours, or two of the same colour (though there is a rule preventing you from continually taking two from the same stack), or you can 'reserve' a card ( up yo three) by taking a gold coin, putting the card in your hand and paying for it later. You can use the golds as an any colour in the game. The final thing you could do is to pay for a card. But you can only do one type of action (collect/reserve/pay) in your turn. If gems run out - too bad, wait for them to come back in again. If someone takes the card you want, too bad, change your strategy. One other thing to note, each card you obtain gives you additional resources to spend, so as you go through the game you should be able to afford more pricey cards! That's the theory until someone takes what you need! Or in my case you keep completely changing your mind...

This was easy peasy to learn and to get to grips with and I can see it absolutely as a 'go to' game where there are 20-30 minutes to spare, or to start a gaming evening off. It's well paced as there is only one action in your turn. It's also ite an 'open' game - it's great being able to see what the others are doing with their resources as you end up thinking about what they might be trying to do as well as trying to look after your own stuff! Set up time is minimal and replayabilty is guaranteed in my view. I can see me getting my gaming-reticent family to play this one, no problems.

Great little runner!Monkeyreadohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16622002447400801134noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7202971185467566904.post-1970564156451595252014-04-30T00:13:00.001+01:002014-04-30T00:13:19.075+01:00Space Marine Command Squad painted (at last). Now I've had four of these painted for ages but I couldn't face the standard bearer because I can't do flags and such. So I cheated. I put on transfers, then painted over them. At last a Command Squad finished...
This time it's personal...I've had Pathfinder ACG : Rise of the Runelords Base Set box for a month now. Why did I get it?

I wanted a game that could be solo as well as co-op.

I wanted fantasy RPG feel, where characters could be continually levelled up.

I like cards.

I like minis but I don't want any more painting. Please no more projects that I'm going to start and then shelve 'cos I'm too darn busy. So, no minis this time please.

Some nice artwork.

Sound 'fluff'.

Expansions if need be, thank you.

LOTR LCG was beginning to do my head in. Numerous fails causing frustration and much gnashing of teeth (but I still love you really...)

Legend of Drizzt appearing too limited in terms of progression within the parameters of the box itself (e.g. levelling up)

A little more complexity than Mice and Mystics (of this game, more at another time).

Aha. Reviews indicated that this might be the one for me. The negative reviews said - too much random, not enough story, broken/unclear ruleset with ever-growing FAQ, not RPG enough, too easy. The (overwhelmingly) positive reviews said - addictive, fun, great cross-over between RPG and board game, easy to learn, then gets harder.

Boom! Have at thee foul beast.

So to end the review at the beginning, both of the positives and negatives are true. But boy do the positives outweigh the negatives. It's great!

Since getting the game, it has been out and played at least a dozen times. Now, given my personal time constraints that's saying something. I have also not played all of the way though the additional campaign card set that is included because I want to get my characters right first. And that in itself should tell you something about the game. There are a number of permutations to equip and mold your character as you go through the order of scenarios. As you go through the 'campaigns' you pick up items and improve your character - and then meet progressively harder enemies.
This works as a solo game or co-op but the real beauty is that in either mode you can work with a number or characters each - which gives a real sense of team building. So, a quick note, in solo play don't use one character, go for three or four. With two or three other players - go for two each. It does mean the game is harder, you have more enemies to get though in a shorter time. But there are so many ways to puzzle out a completion route that it makes losing fun too.

There is a time limit, 30 turns - this is fixed. It might seem that makes it harder for more characters but, of course, they can get more done in that shorter time. Furthermore, you do, quickly, get to know how the game works. I'm not going to say too much about the mechanics. They are straight forward enough. But here goes -
Decide your characters and build them with basic items - suggestions in the rulebook (now revised) so read the FAQs if I were you.
Decide scenarios. Build location encounter decks with specific number of random items/monsters etc.
send characters to locations in order to find items and defeat enemy and henchmen.
That is it. Basically.

I don't think I've done it justice though. Both in terms of the complaints circling on the internet - or the fact that I've really enjoyed playing this. It's a bit like one of those computer games that you love redoing areas because you want to know how else you can get round the monsters and find more loot. it does fit well among different gaming genre. Do not assume RPG strength story telling. Do not assume a board game feel either. When my son (15) and I played, we had a blast telling the story of our adventures in an RPG style as we went along. Try it - it made us laugh.

Highly recommended. Buy it then get your non RPG and RPG mates round and have a laugh too, while probably arguing about why!

Welcome one and all to the next installment of 'Let's play a game'...
Today I'll be writing about a game that has got me just a bit intrigued. Many will complain about what I think are its strengths - indeed I've heard them complain so on the interweb. But for me, I'm a little hooked.

It's very simple see, and that helps me as a bear of little brains. Long words confuse me. The game goes as follows - this is for the starter kit edition only, not the base pack. Though this is now on my wish list!

Two player (you can play more with other versions). Fixed number of victory tokens (60 here). Same starting hands for each player. Shuffle and take 5 as your first hand, when all played, other player goes, you draw five more then shuffle all together each time you have none left. You need to defeat monsters or acquire heroes by playing cards from your hand. As you acquire heroes or defeat monsters from the row on offer infront of you, replace them from the main deck. Meanwhile your deck grows as you acquire new heroes and you take rewards from the victory token pile until all tokens are gone. The game then ends. You count the value of tokens and the printed values on the cards. The highest total wins.

And that's about it. Except for the second thing that many complain about - the art on the cards themselves. Not MTG style at all and, yes, down to personal taste, but I likes 'em and feel that they are a 'breath of fresh air.'

So why the 'hooked' label earlier? Speed of play. Ease of play. Teachable to others in two minutes flat. No set up time to speak of. Limited victory point pool brings the game to a concise end. Some strategy.

Of course there is some strategy. How to mange resources. Which cards to defeat or acquire. How to 'chain' effects. There are four factions which do have linking abilities and work together in different ways. Some cards have ongoing effects. So - just enough strategy to maintain all of the advantages mentioned above.

For me - a great alternative to MTG and no boosters needed - though there are the obligatiory expansions! Heartily recommend this one!Monkeyreadohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16622002447400801134noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7202971185467566904.post-65589321011529285662014-01-31T21:39:00.000+00:002014-01-31T21:39:01.334+00:00Let's play a game - Forbidden Island.

Dear readers,
Allow me to bring you the first in a series of 'brief' board game reviews. It seems, these days, that the rise and rise of the board game is on the rise. At work a couple of game nights have sprung up, the Youtube channel Geek and Sundry cracks on apace, there's Watchitplayed and, of course, Beer and Board games for your delight and delectation. So what can I add? My friends, only the humblest of opinions...
And here I write with reference to those games that I have had a stab at over the last few weeks. Beginning with Forbidden Island.

A very simple game, yet fraught with tension and suspense. Your quest? Find the treasures. Of course! But mind out, the island is sinking to leave you in the swim and with little chance of rescue. Gather the treaures in time - or drown...

So what do you do? Travel round tiles which flip over to show they are sinking. Collect cards to colect the treasures, perform actions to stay alive all before the tiles flip and disappear leaving you stranded.

This is a great game - lots of replayability since your character gets different abilities depending on which one you are playing - and the tiles rest in a different order each game. Yes, it's not complex, and if you play on easy mode you won't get much of a thrill. Also, don't expexct to be sitting for hours working on fabulously complex strategies. This game flies along and is great for those new to games and experienced alike - though some may see it as more of a 'filler'. Played with my son, lots of negotiation to play this co-operative game effectively. You can raise the danger level by turning more treasure cards per round - but you'll sink quicker too! A downside? Not infinitely replayable with the same group - but I'm looking forward to the next version Forbidden Desert.

There is always at least 'one thing' you've always been meaning to see/read/get. For me, 'Swamp Thing' by Alan Moore (Bisette, Totleben too) was at the very top of my very long list of 'one things I really must get'... and so here, at last, is a review from me about something that really should be on all self-respecting comic afficionado's shelves -
So, what did I think? So much has already been written - much of it more sophisticated than I can manage here. Consequently it'll be unecumbered by the weight of any specific expertise - and you might agree with none of it. But I hope, as a result, you'll go and read it yourself (if you haven't already done so).

First impressions? What struck me straight away, is that the narrative is more dynamic than I had expected. Even during 'introspective' moments there is a real sense of movement, both in the drawing and in the 'scripting'. In part this is driven by the non-standard framing. It's responsive to, and part of, the narrative itself. I think also the simplicity of colouring and the uncluttered content of the frames keeps the reader focussed. The writing does makes full use of speech and expositional/narrative text boxes, mostly though, these are short -and intense. I've read back issues of 'Uncanny X-Men', for example, where the dialogue seems to be swamping the story. There's a lot to 'read' but there is a real sense of balance.
Yes, there are many moments of 'introspection' which is the second most important feature of these collections. SwampThing (a a character) cuts an existential figure. He (?) struggles with the nature of his existence and, though the pages of these two books at least, begins to grasp that indeed, he is the sum of what he says and does. Not what he was. Not what he may yet become.
I think that last sentence encapsulates much of the 'story' in these first two books. Swamp Thing has to discover who or what he is, it's a very human set of desires. Yet he is quite clearly not human. He doesn't do human things of necessarily feel in human ways and this is one of the things he has to learn. Interestingly, Swamp thing is not the only one learning about themselves - Abby, Matt, Dr. Woodrue, Arcane...villains and heroes alike appear to be on journeys themselves and, as a reader, that sense of charcter exploration is a further factor in what makes these books so engaging.
There is a lot that's odd here too - mystical, spiritual moments (Yes, I know - and in the 1980s too!), etherial, non-sequential moments. There are elements of gothic horror, science-fiction, philosophy, hallucinations, zombies, super heroes, resurrections and in one episode wierd aliens land are eaten by alligators. You could argue that it's sometimes challenging, not always strightforward, unclear and, well just plain too odd.
But enough said. Your turn. I'm off to buy Book Three.Monkeyreadohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16622002447400801134noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7202971185467566904.post-21049155777392000872013-10-31T23:59:00.001+00:002013-11-01T00:14:09.711+00:00Malifaux: Lady Hammerstrike, the beginning! So, last month, knowing that a new Malifaux was on it's way - and knowing that there's going to be a whole bunch of new plastics and a new rulebook - I took the 'Malifaux plunge'. That is to say, I already had the old 1.5 rulebook but no minis. However, I didn't want to miss the old Viktoria's set before it went out of print, so to speak.
To that end here is Lady Hammerstrike with the base colours painted. The arm is metal/silver with blue /brown wash. the hair is going to be a deep red. White/beige top and denim /black jeans. brass/copper/silver hammer.
We'll see how it goes.
I really like the figures in the pack. It'll probably mean I'll 'have to' purchase the 2e rulebook, but what the hey.
Initially, I just liked the figure and hadn't really decided what I was going to do with it - other than paint it in the same style as the Privateer Press photos.

This mini is from quite a cool little range that Privateer Press do to support their Iron Kingdoms RPG and such. The pose is quite interesting. You can't quite tell where the front is, as she looks askance over her shoulder.

Going back to it recently then, I had painted a Cygnar warjack and Coleman Strykera while ago (see posts), so it seemed sensible to see if I could get her into this army by making her into a journeyman warcaster or gun mage officer of some sort. To that end I painted her with a blue jacket and a similar colour scheme to the warjack.

Here are the pics!
In no way do I claim to be a professional. I haven't got it all looking great by any means, but I did find that these bases enable you to get more varied looks to your infantry bases with minimal extra effort. The only thing is that you still have to patch up the figures' bases. This takes some doing with the minis from the Open Fire! set because the plastic infantry have thicker bases than metal ones. This means that a certain amount of trimming/fiddling is required to get the figures to fit neatly into the slots on the Rural bases.

But there are lots of good details so that when looking at the tabletop you don't get that sense of repetitious uniformity that often comes with painting lots of units at once.

Step one - making the mud look like mud. You can see the wheel ruts on the US Parachute Rifle team base. On the German infantry base there are rocks and logs....

It's better than bad, it's good... LOG (TM).

And then then you add a bit of grassy stuff and you get this ...

Hopefully, you can still see the ruts and logs. These bases are fun to use and you can even adapt the slots for the minis with tabs to fit in to the larger empty slots - again helping to provide loads of options for variety. A decent buy.Monkeyreadohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16622002447400801134noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7202971185467566904.post-15250752802500720042013-08-18T00:06:00.000+01:002013-08-18T00:06:40.424+01:00Flames Of War - Rural bases arrived!Just a quick post to signpost the fact that there will be a few Flames Of War updates in the future containing these -
These are the Battlefront Games Rural Bases. In effect they are bases with ready-made details. Trees (damaged), logs (fallen), fences, (wonky), ruts, mud footprints, rocks, wagon wheels etc. All you need do is glue minis on and away you go. You still have a bit of 'patching up' to do as you have to add mud effects to the minis' bases and cover up all of the joins. Well, we'll see ... the detail is good and it might lead to quicker bases than having to build walls and such like for yourself (see previous post - PaK 40). More later.Monkeyreadohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16622002447400801134noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7202971185467566904.post-51942700710204215912013-08-12T00:45:00.002+01:002013-08-12T00:45:54.042+01:00Flames of War - Open Fire! So, what you have here is a team of US Parachute Rifle, with prone machine gunner and some mud/grass stuck on the base for scenic effect. Basically, it's a bit slow going, however I am making progress. Next up will be a US rifle/MG team and a German rifle/MG team. Look out!

Not strictly a comic strip, or maybe it is. Not strictly a graphic novel, or perhaps it is. Not clearly sure how I would characterise this 'book' at all.

My brother suggested this to me and although I had read excerpts before I'd never been sufficiently interested enough to actually get it. So he bought it for me to save time... with the added note, 'Enjoy! It may take some time to get through!'

This is the story of three generations of Corrigans told in two main time narratives - that of Jimmy, an office 'dogsbody' ('our hero') and that of his grandfather (Jimmy), growing up in the late eighteen hundreds. But both are sad stories. Both Jimmys are bullied, brow-beaten and have truly tragic (or pathetic) lives. There is a real and constant sense of loneliness and isolation. Just when you think human warmth is going to shine through, it melts away in the snow that falls. And there is a constant longing, on the reader's part, for life to be fairer, more just and not quite so unremittingly bleak. Grandfather Jimmy has a painful relationship with his lone-parent father. Contemporary Jimmy attempts an unsuccessful reconcilliation with a father long absent from his own life - the chain-like apron strings that exist between him and his mother pervade the novel. Is it a novel?

It would be too easy to say that it's quite depressing fare. That's not it at all. There is not much in the way of text but the constant thought-provoking nature of the story does mean it takes time to digest and 'mull over'. (My brother was spot on!) It is powerful and affective. That's it! The sadness Ware creates is so human, so recogniseable. Relationships are seen to be complex, unsatisfactory and often fragile. The tragedies are human ones, even everyday ones. But as we read, we feel and that is what makes this book (?) stand out from the rest. It's oddly all too real.

A lot has been said about the muted colouring and simple drawings. Mignola only uses half a dozen colours in 'Hellboy' and Spiegleman's 'Maus' is in black and white. It's clever, it's carefully drawn and, in my opinion, if that's your crticism, you've missed the point. In art (?), form and content have a relationship. And that is clearly seen here. The story panels don't quite tell the story sequentially, the mind wanders, Jimmy's (both of them) mind wanders, there is a kind of 'stream of consciousness here'. It works.

This is genuinely an extraordinary text. I finished reading it a couple of days ago but I still haven't settled on what I think about it fully yet, the ideas are still lingering. Top job Mr Ware. There's so much I have read that I have forgotten. It won't happen with this comic book.Monkeyreadohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16622002447400801134noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7202971185467566904.post-16398042350267624162013-07-29T00:39:00.001+01:002013-07-29T00:40:43.996+01:00Flames Of War - German Grenadier PaK 40, painted and based.

Having read the Mortal Engines series, I was was just about ready to give another steampunk novel a crack. Summarised as a steampunk novel in 19th Century Seattle, with zombies (Huzzah!), I was intrigued by the premise of Cherie Priest's 'Boneshaker'.

There's a lot of story, but I'll try not to spoiler too much. Essentially Seattle has been subject to a disaster apparently caused by the heroine's (Briar) husband, Leviticus Blue. The upshot is that a gas is released causing people to become 'rotters' (read zombies) and the city becomes a no-go area and walled off. Years later, Briar's son wants the truth about his father and breaks into the city where drug runners and other very random characters have made a (sort of) life for themselves. Of course Briar goes after him and the truth of Leviticus Blue's death, or otherwis, is revealed.

But that's not even a small proption of all the shenannigans! In fact, for me, that is the key slight weakness. It's not a long novel, and it's not that the descriptions are too slight compared to the action. It's just that the events and places come so thick and fast that perhaps any real sense of place and character is diluted somewhat. There is atmosphere, but we are at such a pace that it isn't given time to 'brew' sufficiently. To that extent the writing style was similar to a movie script. Particular dramatic moments seemed to be over-written in amongst a dramatic series of events in a longer quest story. There were very strong and simply drawn characters with clearly defined (and predictably developed) relationships. I think the movie script idea holds - indeed I have read that the rights have been bought and I think it would make a great film.

I liked Briar though, fiesty, at times awkward and unsure. Strong-willed and independent. The other characters were not so 'rounded' and left me a little cold in my opinion. There was a pantomime villain at the end and some interesting allies. But what do I know? For me it was a 2 and a half out of 5, but with potential.

Overall then, not as successful as my first steampunk outing. Modern steampunk may still be finding it's feet, so might Priestly. thnakfully still a few more to read though ... watch this space.

I stumbled on the book title while researching steampunk novels. You see, since finishing Martin's 'A Game of Thrones' and Robin Hobbs' first Farseer series, I'd been in a bit of a book lull. Casting around the interweb, I'd thought I'd read some of this new/oldfangled thing called steampunk. I was curious. I liked the Philip Pullman 'His Dark Materials' series - a bit steampunky. I like the Dystopian Legions figures (and got some). I like Warmachine. So ... what else was out there?

And when I say stumble upon I literally stumbled upon the first in the series of Phillip Reeve's 'Mortal Engines', just lying about. I think one of my boys must have read it at some point. Having seen it mentioned, I flicked it open and started to read...

Immediately sucked in.

While there may be a very valid claim that these are 'kids books' - and I can't really dispute that description - just like Pullman and Tolkien’s 'The Hobbit', there is a charm and allure about these novels which is beyond merely children's fiction. The characters are vivid and engaging, the locations threatening and sinister, and the events are dramatic, tense and frequently sombre.

I'll try not to spoil too much.

P.S. Respect to the chapter titles...

Tom Natsworthy works on London. On London because it's a moving city. Cities move in this time - thousands (how many?) of years in the future after war has ended civilisation as we know it now. But how do these cities survive? By 'eating' other cities, after all that's what Municipal Darwinism means. Swallowing other cities to take what is needed to keep your city going. But then there are the anti-tractionists who live in static settlements at war with the moving predatory mechanical conurbations. There are the icy wastes where Anchorage roams and the hidden city under the sea where the Lost Boys creep out.

But this is merely (almost apocalyptically?) a back drop. The lives of the characters - at first Tom, then troubled Hester then Valentine, Shrike the dead mechanical soldier and so on - all come into focus over the course of the four novels. And in time moves on... the story evolves. The history rolls forward, the narrative expands. More characters, stranger locations. But all held together with a desperate desire to hold on to life – and love.

But I could give too much away.

This series is highly recommended – at least by me. It’s not just children’s fiction. Reeve’s skill, compared to other novels I’ve read in the steampunk genre, is that he doesn’t try too hard. There aren’t endless explanations about the backward steampunk technology. Or overwritten dramatic moments which have a movie script in mind. The novels have a very human and frequently, tragic thread. Everything isn’t always alright. Pain hurts. Tension is unpleasant. People are scarred.

But then there’s the power of human experience and the strength of the connections you make with one other.

I was sold.

The first ones up are the US Parachute HQ and a Grenadierkompanie team with a Panzerfaust. I've used a combination of GW, P3 paints and Vallejo paints. Basically I've followed the painting-by-numbers guides in the 'Open Fire' set and mixed and matched where I've needed to. There are also a variety of guides and tips on Battlefront Games' website.
The uniforms, helmets and equipment have Vallejo paints, wood and leather was P3 browns and, of course, there was a brown GW wash thrown in there somewhere. Metals were GW too. Faces GW with the fleshwash.
Overall - pleased with the results. Love the poses and look forward to getting the rest off them on the table and painted during the summer. Fun but fiddly. Not for the faint-hearted and require patience if not lots of skill.
One day I got carried away and jumped, in a bit of a rush, into painting one of the Dystopian Legions Britannia infantry troops. Then it all ground to a halt for a while and Flames Of War took over , then I did a little more. Then I paused again... Not a great deal to do though, so here is a progress update on it.

For the record most paints are GW :

Macragge Blue - Blue wash then Ultramarine blue for the trousers.
Mechrite Red - Blood red, brown wash then Blood Red for the tunic.
The helmet = Bleached Bone and brown wash with Bleached Bone/white highlights.
Pouches/webbing white, sepia wash, then white again.

Early on.

As always, the model looks a complete 2-and-8 at this point, but then nearer the end of the process it sorts itself out somehow. I dunno, I suppose it's some form of magic.Monkeyreadohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16622002447400801134noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7202971185467566904.post-9140264201376567922013-04-26T23:44:00.001+01:002014-01-31T21:42:07.225+00:00Flames of War - some more tanks. Sherman V StuG GAS you will see from the images below, there has been some minor progress on the painting front. These tanks are quite easy to knock out, so they are a satisfactory 'stop-gap' to keep me topped up until my next holiday break allows me to indulge a bit more. Having said that - a few Vallejo paints arrived the other day so I might sneak in a few bits of infantry painting when no one is looking... those fantastic little plastics are so inviting.
A Flames Of War starting point. Here we go then - a few pictures of the infantry sprues from Battlefront's Flames of War starter set - Open Fire! There are already videos posted on my YouTube channel (http://youtu.be/vn8ec0d5O34) showing off the Sherman (and Stug tanks on other videos). Now, although these are from the previous starter set - Achtung! - they are just about the same, though in green plastic for the Sherman/Firefly models.

The Open Fire! set is fantastic. The infantry (German troops and US Airborne) are superbly detailed and in fantastic poses. There are helpful bases with slots to put the troops in. There are guides to modelling, painting, basing the units correctly and expanding your units. There are counters and flat scenery. You get a great deal for your money and can get going really easily with the quick start rules and two small 'armies' ( a small-sized, full version of the rules is included too). I couldn't be more happy - or could I?

My one and only gripe is that I can't get hold of the paints that they suggest on their own website. They used to do Infantry sets of Vallejo paints - but these seem to be unavailable at the moment. So you need to buy individual ones - and that's the advice from Battlefront themselves - not all those are appear to be around all either of the time. Ho hum... I'll be patient, hopefully they will have something up their sleeves!
Some more pictures -
A quick review of a blast from the past.2000AD was a staple of my teenage years. I know I'm not alone when I say that. For me it went right alongside the wargaming, the novels and the hobbying. I also know I'm not alone when I say that. After a while my comic reading and collecting grew to a wider experience. DC's The Question, The Dark Knight Returns...and further ... Stray Toasters (remember that anyone?), 'Nam ,Elektra, and so on - until we get to the trade paperbacks you can read about elsewhere on this blog.

But somewhere along the way 2000AD got left behind. I still have hundreds of the beggars in a box in a cupboard. And that's a real shame because one of my favourite characters is Slaine the King / warrior / berserker and his suffering (insufferable) companion Ukko the dwarf. I loved the work of McMahon, Fabry, Bisley et al. I relished the blood thirsty extravagance of it all. The humour, the darkness, the cultural richness.

That's why I'm at this point. I'm trying to catch up with Slaine and his progress over 'the missing years'. Here are a few thoughts then, about Slaine :Books of Invasions by Pat Mills and Clint Langley.

The Formorian sea daemons have invaded the Land of the Young and Slaine (as so often, against the advice of his council) and Niamh, his wife, fight back against the evil of Moloch and later, Lord Odacon. Things don't go well, lives are destroyed and desperate measures taken. Even the Earth Goddess Danu's protection appears to require peculiar sacrifices to be made. Leaping through the mud and blood, as always, but without Ukko, Slaine slices left and dices right, proclaiming 'Kiss my axe!' as he wades in a sea of slaughter.

Not much had changed then.

This was, throughout, a hugely enjoyable read. I can't quite say if my feelings about these stories were coloured by a sense of nostalgia, all I can say is that it felt good to be back. in the land of Tir Nan Og. The stories - given their episodic format - were neatly told, narratively well paced and balanced between destruction and the journey Slaine has to take. This was how I remembered him.

It's not an easy journey of course. Along the way he forms alliances with the Scota (an Atlantean tribe), he has to survive challenges form Danu and defeat daemons of might and power, axe and spear in hand. And there is sorrow.

In the last volume the story is completed with a full scale battle, a city under seige and, as an epilogue, there is the addition of a return to Ukko, where Slaine finds his son and embarks on a Sherlock Holmes-like investigation into strange goings on among the even stranger denizens of The Carnival.

The final (or most important) and most stunning feature of these volumes is the artwork. It is spectacular in so many ways. Langley uses a mixture of fully painted artwork and digitally manipulated images to create something truly ... visceral. It has power, sensuality, horror and, in places, beauty. The fire burns. The blood splatters and gushes. The darkness engulfs. This is the point. It's a perfect match for this world of Pat Mills' imagination, which itself 'borrows' from ancient Celtic myths and legends - deliberately so.

Sit down. kick back. Grab a beer. Give yourself time to read these - your eyes will want linger over the details, the colours, the landscapes, the characters (don't read it in dim light, you'll miss bits!) - you won't be stop yourself from exploring the 'widescreen' style pages, inch by astonishing, luxurious, inch.

Dystopian Legions. Kingdom of Britannia. 'Ready. Aim. Fire!'As one of the 'Christmas arrivals' I have now acquired a Kingdom Of Britannia Starter Set from Spartan Games. It's from their new game based in the same the world as Dystopian Wars. At the moment I guess we're looking at skirmish level gaming here - but I'm assuming that in time more products will appear to enable the game to be scaled up. These are already coming out. So, there are four Armies - Kingdom Of Britannia, Empire Of The Blazing Sun, Prussian Empire and the Federated States Of America. I believe some mercenaries will eventually find their way out too.

I got a lot of my initial information from the chap at Tales Of A Tabletop Skirmisher - ( http://pressganger.blogspot.co.uk/ ) and he does a pretty good job of reviewing everything that's going on with this game currently.

I think what caught my eye mainly was the Victorian/steampunk theme of the British set, but it's also clear from the poses and some of the language on the game cards that there is obviously a 'tongue-in-cheek' quality about the whole affair. There are game effects called 'Stiff Upper Lip', 'Tally Ho!' and 'How's that!' for example. And the captain in the Starter Set is called Gilbert Smethington and he clearly has more than a passing resemblance to Flashheart from the Black Adder TV series.
Looking forward to painting and absorbing the quickplay rules which were included in the set. Good value at £37 or so, there's a lot in the box. A free PDF of the quickplay rules is available at Spartan Games as well as some other helpful downloads. 'Carry On, Sergeant!'Monkeyreadohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16622002447400801134noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7202971185467566904.post-25296089487077927542012-10-31T22:20:00.001+00:002012-10-31T22:20:54.827+00:00The new look 'White Dwarf' vs 'No Quarter' ... a penny for my thoughts?
What I'd thought I would do with this post is to consider a face-off between these two titles. It's Games Workshop vs. Privateer Press.

Games Workshop have recently revamped the design and content of their decades running monthly magazine - we are currently on November's issue (£5.50), the second of the new format. No Quarter is on Issue No. 44 and is bi-monthly ( about £4.50 depending) - representing seven years or so. I love magazines, I confess. And books. I'm not one for Kindles or tablets. I want to turn the pages by hand. A physical sensation. A4 size.If I want a close up, I move the page closer.

Ah, I remember, back in the day, reading RPG backgrounds and 'Thrud The Barbarian' cartoons, all in amongst the various wargaming articles and reviews in the old White Dwarf. I then left for a long time and a few years ago, came back to a completely different publication that was very much focused solely on the models and the Warhammer gaming universes. There wasn't much else. Not that that was a bad thing, I needed lots of information to get going again with all of the gaming knowledge that had bypassed me. And I loved the rich variety of source material that provided ample inspiration for my painting, especially - and here I bow - the fantastic 'Eavy Metal articles that helped me move my painting on to a new level (or at least to a more acceptable one!).

Why all this preamble? Well, I guess because No Quarter has a bit of that feel about it. There is ample background 'fluff'. Indeed it seems clear that No Quarter is continually helping to build the Warma/Hordes universes as it goes along. The pages often feel like extracts from a 'codex' of sorts. The layout supports this design style too. Pages seem like they have been torn from journals, or from ancient reports and there are a variety of colours and font styles used, which go hand-in-hand with the type of faction being discussed. There is also a great deal of fantastic artwork and and page-edge design that really gives the magazine a sense of coherency across the various different sections of the magazine itself. There are RPG backgrounds, short stories, reviews and articles about other products from Privateer Press. The readers are also represented with examples of their painting and often the opening editorial-style articles show that the staff actually do go out into the wide world.

In Issue 44 of No Quarter, you've got detailed conversion articles, the obligatory catalogue pages (only a few though), tournament and painting sections, background, army building, a section on playing scenarios in another game (Level 7), RPG info, battle reports, and readers' models. I do feel that the photographing isn't up to scratch - this sometimes helps blur the fact that some of the models used in the articles aren't quite up to the painting level of WD. There's a lot here, though I would say that compared to White Dwarf, there's a little more of a sense of randomness about the content. I never know quite what I'm going to get! Until recently, with White Dwarf, I knew exactly. It had come to feel too much like a catalogue for the products and if you weren't into this month's catalogue items, you were left a bit miffed at not having a great deal to delve into. I feel that if WD could learn anything, it would be about page design and the use of stories and background to help the universe 'live' in the pages.

Then we come to the new White Dwarf. To begin : I like it. I like it a lot. The strident design, the attempts to show us the real people at GW. I think ' This month in...' is a great idea. The fantastic photographs - and the infinite painting guidance that this represents. I also am really pleased that they have broadened their outlook -Forge World, novels, audio books - golly Fantasy Flight Games even got a look in with their 40K related board game! It feels all the better for this. The articles are also more discursive, exploratory and there is less reliance on a 'wodge' of bat reps. The catalogue feel is still there, however, but it now feels more like a model showcase, with excellent close-ups and atmospheric backgrounds. I'm still not sure what Blanchitsu is for (though I love his painting style and artwork - so keep it coming) and I'm also not really convinced by either of the rather similar, Jeremy Vetock and Jervis Johnson articles. They can all too easily appear to be bland and entirely irrelevant. I also get 'miffed' again at the insistence with the focus of one army per issue (last month 40k Chaos, this month Fantasy Chaos). I mean it says Lord of the Rings of the front, but there isn't any in it!

Furthermore, there are great modelling articles so far, great ideas for terrain, conversions and armies. Let it not seem that I am a ranting sycophant though -oh no. Two concerns -

1) Fonts and colours of pages. I like the worn appearance of the pages - but really the same font for all armies, all sections - and exactly the same colours? Surely there is some way to differentiate between sections in the magazine that lends clarity to the divisions between the sections. Just flicking thorough, you can't really tell what is where. The font at he moment is a kind of modern-machine-block, like the type on the front. But is this really any good for Elves, Orcs, LOTR etc. It'll seem a bit odd to me. Pedantry perhaps?

2) This is may main gripe so far though - the painting articles are too basic, too short and poorly developed. I think that if, as it seems, the style is to bring in a wider audience, but a more savvy one, then the painting guides have to do so too. Where is my 'Eavy Metal please GW? You've just brought out all of these new paints. Show me how to use them dammit! I am currently watching WarbossTae on You Tube for this...

So, in conclusion. Thumbs up to both. I have perused the various Internet versions of gaming magazines - some have really good sections, but these two lead the way. And - theyr'e real. You can have them by you when you are painting and cart them about in your back pocket, without worrying if you sit on them. I hope to see GW 'tinker' in months to come, I'd like to see PP's magazine grow and add some photograhic finesse. I'll give both 5/5 stars if they sort out my gripes, but for now 3.75/5 for NQ and 4/5 for WD.
